FAQs

HOW DO THE MEAL PLANS WORK?

All Meal Plans operate on a declining balance system that is conveniently connected to your Student Photo ID card, so you don’t have to carry multiple cards. Your Student Identification Card is your Meal Card! Choose and pay for a plan. Then every time you make a purchase from either the Dana Market & Eatery or the Tim Horton’s, the amount of the purchase is automatically subtracted from your balance.  You can view balance and the most recent transaction history online, anytime.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT PLAN IS BEST FOR ME?

We provide several options to accommodate various life-style and usage needs. To get started, simply choose which meal plan option works best for you.
As a rule of thumb, if you are planning to eat two or more meals a day on campus then you should consider a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Plan as this will help make your money go farther by saving 13% taxes. Either the Tier 1 or Tier 2 Plan is mandatory for all first year resident students living in residence. Both plans are the best value available and they can be easily topped up if funds run low.

WHERE DO I PURCHASE MY DINING PLAN?

Meal plans can be ordered online http://algoma.icaneat.ca/mealplan/ or in person at the Dana Office in the Main Cafeteria. We accept Interact, Master Card and Visa. For more information on purchasing any plan please contact the Manager in the Dana Office at (705) 949-2301 Ext 4650 or algomafood@danahospitality.ca. Students living in residence can purchase their meal plans through the student accounts office.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONVENIENCE PLANS AND TAX EXEMPT MEAL PLANS?

Full Meal Plans qualify for tax exemption because they are prepaid in full at the beginning of the semester. You can choose either a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Plan. No tax is charged on prepared food and beverage purchases when you dine at the Dana Market & Eatery on campus. Tax exempt Meal Plans do expire when the plan term expires. Flex Plans are like cash. The money you or your parents load on Flex Plans has tax applied to all purchases when you dine in Dana food outlets on campus. Flex Plans simply save you from carrying cash and they do not expire because they are not tied to a term.

CAN I CARRY MY PLAN FORWARD PER YEAR OR TERM?

Flex Plans never expire so you can keep on using it until you run out of funds. These dollars don’t expire but we suspend the plan balances on April 30th, 2021 to protect your balance while on summer term. Simply reactive your card when you come back to campus at the Dana Office, our staff will be ready to help you. Tax exempt Tier 1 and Tier 2 do expire at the end of each term. Tax exempt balances must be over the required spending amount of $1410 to meet the requirement of a tax free plan. Balances over the required spending amount may be converted, by request, to a taxable plan at the end of the term or year end. This is subject to a $50 administration fee. Please note there are no cash refunds on any meal plans.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CARD IS LOST OR STOLEN?

The security of a card remains the card-holder’s responsibility. Cards should be treated like a credit or debit card. If you lose your Student Photo ID Card please notify us immediately and get it replaced. Once you have a replacement card, be sure to come to the cafeteria as your Meal Plan is based on its unique 5-digit code and it will need to be updated in our records to transfer the balance. If a card is lost or stolen the cardholder is responsible for all purchases made with that card until the card is reported lost or stolen.

WHERE CAN I USE MY DINING PLAN?

Dana’s locations include both the main cafeteria the Dana Market & Eatery, and the Tim Horton’s.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET MY CARD?

Your activated Meal Plan card is the key to the whole dining plan system. If you forget it you will have to pay cash.

WHAT IF I DECIDE TO PURCHASE THE FLEX PLAN HALF WAY THROUGH THE SEMESTER?

Flex Plans do not expire so they can be purchased or topped up at any time of the year.  Tier 1 and Tier 2 plans can be purchased at any time, but they do expire so the earlier you purchase the better.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND POLICY?

Tax exempt Plans are only refundable if you withdraw completely from the College. A $50 administration fee will be applied. Reloadable Flex cards have no expiry date and are therefore not refundable.
